What problems in the solar street light industry?
1. 🎯 Fake Rated Wattage
This is the No.1 trap. Manufacturers often highlight wattage as a selling point, but sometimes this number means nothing. For example, the black solar street light is declared 1000w, but the actual working power is only 5w to 10w. Many customers are not well noted about this trick, only telling the suppliers they want 100W, 200W or 1000W, the result would only be that the product is far from their actual demand.

According to IEC62722-2-1, LED Light, the maximum tolerance limit is ±10%. But for solar street light industry, there is no a national standard for the wattage rating. This is why customer need to know the real watts always, details would be talked in later chapter.
2. 🔋 Actual Battery Capacity and Quality
Unit "Ah" is only a part but not complete for battery capacity. When you see the parameters 36Ah for example, you should also check the voltage 3.2v, 3.7v, 11.1v, 12.8v or 25.6v. Multiply the voltage and Ah to get the number with unit of Wh, this is the final capacity for battery. Sure there is more details about battery voltage tricks in the later chapter.
Another big problem for batter is that 2nd hand battery are largely used in solar street light industry, this type battery is dangerous, easy to get Spontaneous combustion and the capacity drops quickly.
3. 🌙 Counting LED Lens Quantity to judge the Wattage
Some companies use more quantity LED quantity to make the solar street light. The quantity of LED is important but not that important on the other hand. Commonly each 1 pcs led working power is 0.5W to 1.5W. So for a 100W light, 70 to 200 pcs quantity of led is enough, the more important thing is the heat radiation performance. The lumen will drops quickly if no good heat radiation. According to IEC standard, the led lumen maintenance should be higher than 80% after 50,000 hours.
4. ☀️ Misunderstand the effective sunshine charging time
The charging time of solar panel is not the time from sunrise to sunset, but the effective charging time is calculated by the peak sun hours. From all the countries globally the longest average peak sun hours is 6.5h, these countries mostly are from middle east and African countries. And the average 6.5 hours means at December it might be 5 hours only. So the charging time should be calculated on the winter season peak sun hours.
5. 📐 Ignore the installation angle effect for charging
According to the actual test, the charging efficiency difference of solar panel Directly facing vs Diagonally facing sunshine is more than 30%. Commonly the solar street light project installation are at different side or directions, so the angle adjust availability is necessary for the solar street light.

Autonomy/Back up Days misunderstanding
Mostly the declared autonomy is 3 days. But commonly this 3 days does not mean the light will work with full power for 3 nights, the controller will drop the working power automatically to save the energy under rainy days. If customers want strictly full power back up for 3 days, it could be realized but battery capacity would be very big and the price is much higher. So buyer should be clear what you need really.
How to define the real watts of solar street light?
Some supplier telling buyers that "Wattage tells you how much power the light consumes - lumens tell you how bright it actually is. Always
prioritize lumens whencomparing products." Is this correct? NO.
Solar street light is a combination and balance between Solar Panel, Battery and LED. Solar Panel decides charging(Input), Battery decides Storage, LED decides Output. So no matter how high the LED Watt or Lumen is, if the solar panel or battery small, there is no enough input or storage to support the LED to work with high wattage or lumen for whole nights. LED is not expensive, but battery is. This is why some companies play game on big rated wattage. Some lights might reach that fake rated watts in short time, but can not work for long time, so they make the light work under dimming mode, which actual working power only 20% after several hours.
💡 Key Insight:
An easy calculation way is to transfer the final unit to Wh of Solar Panel Charging, Battery Storage and LED Consumption.
For example, a Rated 50W solar street light work 12 hours every night, solar panel is 150W charging 6 hours every day, battery is 25.6V 30Ah.
Solar Panel: 150*6=900Wh Battery: 25.6*30=768Wh LED: 50*12=600Wh
Input>Storage>Output
This means the rated power 50W is real. If the lumen efficiency is 200lm/W, the real working lumen is 50*200=10,000lm.
Now you should know how to judge the real watts and lumen for solar street light. This is the 1st thing you need to know.
How to choose Battery types and specification
Battery Type: Lithium ion, LiFe PO4 Lithium-LiFe PO4 is more preferred for its high temperature performance.
Battery Capacity: How much Voltage and How much Ah.
Battery Voltage: 3.2v, 12.8v or 25.6v
💡 Attention:
Keep far way from the 3.2V system.
1.Each cell of LiFe PO4 Lithium battery is 3.2V, when the complete light battery group voltage is 3.2V, all the cells are parallel connected. The advantage of Parallel connection is that the system will still keep working when any cells defected, only the total capacity drops, but users don't find it easily.
2.To reach a 60W actual real wattage for example, the current for 3.2V system is 60/3.2=18.75A, the current for 25.6V system is 60/25.6=2.34A. The big current 18.75A will cause big burden for the system, much higher loss during transmission and drop the product lifetime heavily.
3.3.2V means the batteries used are probably 2nd hand battery.
So choose the 25.6V system or 12.8V system instead of 3.2V. The higher the voltage, the better the battery quality.
How to choose LED
LED Quality is mainly judged by 2 parameters: ①Lumen Efficiency ②Lifetime
•Lumen efficiency is mainly influenced by LED Chip and LED Encapsulation mode(3030/5050). Highest 3030 Chip efficiency is 210lm/W, highest 5050 efficiency is 240lm/w maximum.
•Lifetime is influenced by 3 factors: ①LED Chip, ②LED Encapsulation Mode, and ③Heat Radiation. LED Chip and LED Encapsulation are not big different because all the led chips manufacturer are doing good quality control. LED Heat radiation is more important for the lifetime. Most companies are just adding the led quantity which could be seen from out side, but don't care the led heat radiation which can not be seen from outside.
As photos below, the left is solid die casting aluminum, the right is only a thin aluminum sheet, does not have a good heat radiation, will cause heavy lumen loss gradually. Lumen maintenance standard is 80% after 50,000 hours and 60% after 100,000 hours.



How to choose Solar Panel?
Solar Panel decides the charging capacity, only enough charging can guarantee the battery storage and led working.
Mostly used solar panel types for solar street light now is Mono Crystalline for its higher efficiency. Under Mono Crystalline panel, there are P type and N type. N type is now more used for its higher efficiency. For P type, when there were any small block on the panel, the total charging will be influenced. For N type, the complete charging efficiency will not be influenced by a partial block.
•Solar Panel watt is decided by 2 factors: ①Size and ②Efficiency.
•For mono crystalline solar panel, highest cell efficiency in the industry is 24%. After made into complete sheet solar panel and calculating by the dimension of all in one solar street light, the efficiency is around 19%. So imagine(actually not) all suppliers using highest efficiency solar panel. You could calculate the actual solar panel watt by formula as below:
Length(mm)*Width(mm)/1000*19%=Watt
•Take our 140W solar street light with 180W panel for example. The dimension is 1855*535mm. So the actual Watt=1855*535/1000*19%=188W.
•With this formula you could calculate all the solar panel watt of other companies. Many other companies' actual power is only 60%-70% of their ratings.

How to choose Housing&Mechanical Design?
A good housing&mechanical design is important for its strength, air cooling, charging efficiency and aesthetics.
•There are 2 kinds materials of bracket mostly used: ①Die Casting Aluminum ②Welding Aluminum.
•Die casting aluminum is much stronger than welding aluminum. Especially for high power solar street light, the weight is heavy. Die casting aluminum has much better safety guarantee. Strong design need to stand at least 12th grade typhoon.
The adjustable angle together with the LED Module adjustable design is very important for the solar panel maximize the charging angle to the sunshine.
Controller and Battery are comparatively vulnerable parts for solar street lights, considering the future maintenance, an easy replacing battery and controller is more preferred.
Last but important, and most easily be ignored by customers is the aesthetics design. Lighting is an important part for the city aesthetics, a good design should not only have good function performance but add points for city beauty.

Real Wattage verified - Match Solar Panel, Battery with LED Wattage
Battery Type and Capacity - LiFePO₄ is strongly preferred, 12.8V and 25.6V is good, 3.2V means probably battery is 2nd hand.
LED Efficiency - Choose high lumen efficiency, most important to check the heat radiation design.
Solar panel real power - Calculate the real power by the dimension formular.
